Platinum, the Perfect Mens Wedding Ring MaterialWhat is platinum? Platinum is one of the most popular metals for mens rings. It is one of the rarest of the precious metals. It is also one of the strongest as well as one of the heaviest, being heavier than gold. 2000 years ago the South American Indians made jewellery from lumps of Platinum that they found, usually in the river. It is even possible to find examples of the use of Platinum from in the decoration of european caskets from almost 3000 years ago. The use of Platinum as a jewellery material can also be seen extensively from the 18th century. In the 1960s Platinum jewellery became exceedingly popular in Japan and then a decade later italso started to gain in popularity in Germany, and then in other european countries. In the last 10 to 15 years Platinum has had a surge in popularity in the US as a wedding jewellery metal. Platinum is very hard, and for this reason it does not scratch easily. Whereas a ring made of gold, for example, will actually lose some of its gold when it is scratched, a Platinum ring will not. This is because gold is much softer. A Platinum ring is usually alloyed (mixed) with other metals such as Iridium or Paladium. Usually expect around 90% to 95% Platinum. A Platinum ring will develop its own whitish luster after some time, known as a patina. This is part of the appeal of Platinum. If you wish you can take it to a jeweller to polish it but this is not necessary. It can be cleaned at home by soaking in a solution of warm water and soap and polished with a soft bristled brush or cloth. Most men are happy with the luster and do not wish to polish it off.
